We’ve read lots of articles this week on how to beat the post-Christmas blues and get your 2015 off to a great start. So many, in fact, that we’ve decided that there’s nothing for it but to write our own!
Here are our top tips for starting your year as you mean to go on.
1. If you’re making resolutions, make sure you write them down.
There’s not much point spending the first week of January coming up with carefully constructed New Year’s Resolutions, and then forgetting about them by the 1 February because you didn’t write them down. Get some nice notepaper, attempt your best handwriting and stick a list on your fridge or somewhere you won’t be able to miss it.
2. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
With our Facebook and Twitter feeds full of posts from friends ‘heading to the gym AGAIN!’ or trying new year juice detoxes, you could be forgiven for thinking your year hasn’t started properly if you haven’t already donned the lycra and headed down to the gym at least twice a day. But think again. January is traditionally a cold, wet, skint and altogether miserable month, so give yourself a break. Getting through your post-break emails and back into the swing of your work routine is enough for now. Remember, there’s a reason we have lots of leftover chocolate in January – to get us through the month.
3. Enjoy your job.
It can be easy to get into a rut, but the new year is a great time to really tackle the tasks you’ve been putting off, and get back to doing the parts of your job that you really enjoy. Go on, kiss those frogs! You’ll thank us for it, we’re sure.
4. Make some resolutions on behalf of your business.
If you’re a sole trader or run your own business, it’s a great idea to write a list of resolutions, not just for you but for your brand. What do you want to work on this year? What do you want to achieve? Perhaps kick this off by researching some new marketing techniques, spend some time with colleagues you don’t often speak to, or contact some new potential collaborators. It won’t be long before the ideas are flowing.
5. Start the year with something new.
This can be big or small, from a new hobby to a new work notebook, but starting the year off with something new and exciting can really lift your mood. If nothing else, get yourself a nice new diary, you’ll be needing one of those anyway!
Good luck, and Happy 2015 from the AQ Team.
